DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

This is a part-time position with the responsibility for accompanying students while riding school transportation vehicles and for insuring their safe transportation to and from school. An individual in this class has the added personal responsibility for supervising and assisting students at bus stops and while boarding and alighting from vehicles. The work is performed independently with only occasional direction from a superior. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative Only)

Instructs children in precautions to be taken when crossing street at bus stop;
Assists children in boarding and alighting from bus;
Instructs children in proper behavior while riding bus and supervises them while on the bus to

insure the safety and welfare of all;
Keeps school authorities informed as to infractions of rules by students;
Keeps school authorities informed as to any improper operation of school buses including but not limited to unclean buses, broken seats, broken windows, faulty equipment, failure of driver to observe safe driving practices, frequent lateness of buses, and failure to pick up assigned children at assigned stops;

Keeps school authorities informed of any repeated action by public sector at school bus stops that interfere with the safety of children;
Assists children from school bus to school building to insure the welfare and safety of all; 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Working knowledge of Yonkers Board of Education principles, practices and procedures relating

to transporting students to and from school;
Ability to get along with and gain the cooperation of children of diverse ethnic, social and

economic backgrounds;
Ability to read and write on a grade school level;
Ability to effectively communicate with children;
Good moral character; good powers of observation; good judgment; tact; courtesy; patience;

dependability;
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One (l) year of experience that involved the care and supervision of children and/or adolescents engaged in group activities in either an educational, social, recreational or custodial environment.
